Companion Dog or "CD" Training Program
Date and Time to be decided.
Please e-mail if you are interested.
Class purpose: To provide a logical
step-by-step approach to training you and your dog to prepare to enter
trials and earn your Companion Dog Title. We will cover both AKC & UKC
CD's.
Handouts included and problem solving for
common problems encountered when training a dog for competition obedience.
THIS IS NOT
meant to be a "PET" obedience class and is strictly geared
towards competition and going on to earn titles. Pets are welcome if
the owners are interested in working within the class guidelines. |
RALLY |
|
No
Classes Scheduled
This class will introduce you to all 50 AKC Rally exercises;
course navigation; AKC scoring. We will work toward proficiency of
the novice and advanced exercises.
With very few
limits set on-hand signals and voice commands/encouragement, Rally
is a great way to prepare your novice dog for the more rigorous
traditional obedience venue. It's also the perfect way to keep our
aging agility and obedience stars working into their golden years.
Rally
has been approved to become a titling event January 1st, 2005. Rally is a
sport, held in conjunction with Obedience, where the dog and handler
proceed at their own pace through a course of directional signs in a
manner similar to Rally Car Racing. The signs are numbered sequentially in
the ring to indicate the course the handler must take. The dog and handler
team heel from sign to sign and perform the exercises indicated on the
sign at each location. Each sign contains an exercise illustrated with
symbols.
This
new dog sport is going to be sweeping the nation. It was created to
promote a positive relationship between the dog and its owner. Animation
and enthusiasm throughout the performance is encouraged. Emphasis is on fun
and excitement for the dog and handler, and the spectator, by
providing a more “natural” approach to the performance.
Each team is judged on the execution of a single, continuous performance
of numbered exercises on a course, uninterrupted by orders from the judge.
Many of the exercises are derived from “doodles” people use when
training for Obedience.
Perfect heel position is not required but you must maintain a loose leash
at all times. Harsh verbal or leash corrections are
not tolerated.
A title may be earned in each of three levels - Novice, Advanced and
Excellent. In addition, a dog may continue to compete in the Advanced and
Excellent classes to earn a Rally Advanced Excellent title. The suffix
title designations are RN, RA, RE and RA.
I
will be offering this class for students who are interested. For more
information about this exciting new venue

RULES |
|
BEFORE CLASS:
Do NOT work sequences and practice with your dog. SAVE yourself AND YOUR DOG
for the class experience. If your dog needs to "burn off energy" then go out
into the field and throw a ball or use some other warm-up method. Daniel and
I cannot adequately teach dogs that are already warn out or who have already
"mastered" a sequence we intended to teach. In short,
KEEP YOUR DOG OFF THE FIELD AND EQUIPMENT UNTIL CLASS Currently we have NO
classes that follow any of our current classes so if you wish to practice
you must wait until AFTER CLASS to use the equipment.
DURING CLASS:
When you are in class PLEASE watch AND listen (be quiet! do not talk to your
friends <G>) to the instructor EVEN when it is not your turn. This serves
multiple purposes...
#1. You could actually learn something from somebody else's problem!
#2. It saves the Instructor from having the repeat something you would've
heard had you been listening saving EVERYBODY time!
#3. It prevents other dogs AND their handlers <G> from being distracted
watching (or listening) to you! (and wondering if they can or should be
doing something else... the answer is NO..... EVERYBODY in class NEEDS to
watch the rest of the students on the exercises OR be taking a "legal"
break). There are NO EXCEPTIONS!
SO, UNLESS you are directed to do so, DO NOT wander off during class (with
the exception of taking your dog out to go potty, you going potty, get a
drink, treat etc....). This means you MAY NOT GO PRACTICE ON EQUIPMENT
DURING CLASS UNLESS told you can do so by the instructor on that day. (and
there may be times when we set up just such a scenario) We ALWAYS allow
students to stay after and practice on the field so there is no reason not
to wait until class is over. At night we even leave the lights on until
everybody has cleared out. As an Instructor I cannot tell you how annoying
(and time-consuming) it is to have to re-explain something because you were
off doing your own thing (that doesn't include the "excusable" reasons to
wander off for a short period). I NEVER mind explaining & re-explaining
something that isn't clear or doing my best to help a student "get it" IF
that student WAS paying attention in the first place <G>!
SO, To RECAP.... at least in MY classes, PLEASE show up PRIOR to class to
walk the course (if you're going to run it for a warm up). If classes
continue to be huge we will have to stop that practice as it clearly took a
good 30 minutes on Wed. morning..... IF size permits (and I'm thinking that
if we have 6 or less, we can probably run the warm up..... more then that it
should be skipped) the warm up should begin at 9am sharp. In addition, you
are not trying to get your "run-thrus" worth... you are simply warming up.
Perhaps I should designate a smaller loop for that OR we can just use a
practice jump as a warm up like what is done at trials. Do not reattempt or
redo pieces.... There simply is not time.....
DO NOT work on the field with your dog PRIOR to class or DURING class UNLESS
you are the one working the exercise with the Instructor OR you have been
directed to do so in small groups BY the Instructor. DO listen to your
fellow students during their time as you just might learn something useful
OR have the same or similar problem. |
